Every garage door is unique. Here's some of their stories...

Living in different places all have their pros and cons, urban life may be for some while others prefer rural life. Others still enjoy suburbia for its many benefits, and none of these people are wrong in their choices. What I am here to talk about is to posit that while garage  doors are not unheard of in urban areas, they are not exactly common. So do garage doors affect your appraisal of these different regions? I am here today to show you that if they do not, that they should. I will also be getting into why and how they should of course. Each population has its own perks which work for different people, but here we are just focusing on the garage aspect of these areas. It is a pretty specific point, so I think we can get pretty detailed with it all pretty quickly. With nothing else to say on the matter, let's get started with urban areas.

One to Two Garage Doors

Your garage doors in many ways should match your home. They should be of similar or complimenting styles, and should reflect what is on the inside as well as the outside of your house if at all possible. So if you have got matching his and her armchairs and his and her sinks you may want to think about getting two garage doors for those red and blue Toyota Camrys you bought yourselves. Having two garage doors may make you feel like a modern day sultan in some respects, but it really is a pretty common way to go if you imagine that you will mostly be parking cars ii your garage and heaps of storage isn't a necessity. While the larger single door approach would most likely be best suited for those "garage door entrepreneurs" it might not be best for those who will be going in and out of their garages often with multiple cars. While this is mostly about functionality aesthetics obviously do play a role because you do want to be happy with the set up you have got going on, so sit back and lets have a think about what might work better for you. In the end you have two choices, (or three if you have a huge garage really) one garage door or multiple.

Garage Door Home Safety

2015-07-02 15:31:44

When living anywhere regardless of how dangerous the area is we always make sure to make safety a priority. In your home, where you and your loved ones feel safest, it is especially important that you take precautions to protect yourselves from intruders. We double check the locks on our doors at night and make sure when we are buying doors and windows that they can be securely locked. While these may seem like small details they are also some of the most important details we check because they ensure us that our family and our loved ones are as safe as they can be. Doors, windows, even skylights can often be points of entry for intruders, but one of the places many can be most vulnerable is the garage door.

Garage Entrepreneurs

It seems more and more often these days people are running their own businesses. Whether it is a small business printing hilarious T shirts in your off time, or doing handmade crafts to pay all of the bills, with the dawn of the internet it has become easier to run small businesses from your home. The thing is all of these business for the most part are selling products that need to be stored somewhere. Small businesses or personal businesses when they start out are often just run out of the person's house. This usually means that the garage becomes the "warehouse" so to speak. While it is certainly more professional than just keeping your stock in the cupboard, a garage is no warehouse. Despite all that small home businesses rely on this to be a secure place where they can package, store and ship, what is in many cases their livelihood, without being hassled by neighbors or passersby. Their garage door is the main line of security when it comes to their business and so garage doors for many people have become a valuable piece of their business, rather unexpectedly.

We last saw what a boon a garage door is to your wellbeing in keeping out everyday weather occurrences, i.e. your rains, winds, snows, etc. There are other types of weather though right? There are tornadoes, hurricanes, monsoons, blizzards and more. And while these are mostly only once a year type occurrence not having to worry about one less thing, your garage door, is nice. So what type of things do a simple garage door really keep you safe from, besides worry and the investigative gazes of your neighbors? Well it depends on what sort of natural disaster is brewing in your area, but we can see just what you might be dealing with if you had a broken garage door in these instances, and what a lovely life you will be leading if you have a good solid garage door protecting your garage. So lets get to them and get ready to enjoy all of the things you won't have to be dealing with because you got your garage door installed professionally the other day, and just in time.

Your garage door is the modern day drawbridge to your "castle" right? It keeps out intruders fairly well and you can open and close it with minimal movement. You are a king in your castle in many respects, it is truly a modern day marvel. But a garage door is much more than that because it keeps out more than just unwanted guests, it very competently keeps out all manner of weather. And that is what we are here to talk about today, whether or not your garage door is installed to weather the weather. It is one of the most important functions of a garage door, to keep out the weather, and if you had a good garage door installation you should be able to stand up to quite a few different types of it without a broken garage door. Rain, sleet or snow, your garage door will stand strong in its attempt to keep your things dry and untouched. So before that tropical storm hits land make sure to repair your garage door so you kit sit back worry free and enjoy nature's beauty.

As you may know or have read here even in many things form is meant to follow function. In garage doors this axiom holds true. There are literally thousands of doors and style to choose from, but the most important thing to do is to narrow your choices to what can functionally work for you and then narrow them further to what sort of garage door you can live with. While it may seem like a minor detail in the grand scheme of your life being greeted by a garage door which continually works and that you chose as your favorite out of a few hundred is a nice way to start and end your day. It is important to remember that while it may be a seemingly insignificant piece of machinery it acts as a gate way to the outside world in many senses. You garage door separates you from the outside world as you command it to open for you as you begin your morning commute to work, and it welcomes you home after a long day at the office as it closes behind you. While that may seem a bit like puffery and you most likely won't be noticing that every day when you leave for and return from work you will notice it subconsciously and every once in a while when you see that garage door raise and fall. So when choosing a style of garage door that works for you you basically have to rather easy jobs if you know what you want, and two somewhat tougher jobs if you don't. The first job is to do the first narrowing of your search and figure out which style of garage door works for you. The second job you can give your self is to simply find the right one out of those that are left that you think you will enjoy having as a part of your home for years to come.

Form Versus Function

2015-06-16 15:17:35

As with there being different style of garage door, which we have already covered, there are other aesthetic choices that you need to make when replacing a broken garage door or installing a new one. And while you may have thought about your dream house and every inch of its exterior and interior when you were designing it, or you may have simply found your perfect home already on market, regardless the garage door and garage are not thought about explicitly in this process. It seems the garage is often implicitly designed to mirror the style of the house but at the same time not draw too much attention to itself. It is always thought that the real "hero" should be the house's architecture, location, etc. and the garage is secondary. While that may be the prevailing ideology when it comes to choosing and designing a new home for you or your family to live in for the future why not turn that idea on its head?

Finding the Right Company

2015-06-14 15:16:04

Getting one of your appliances fixed is always tough. You have a few moments where you go through all of the trouble shooting techniques that you think might be responsible for the problem and pretty much inevitably find that it is beyond your area of expertise. Whether it is a broken dishwasher, broken laundry machine, or broken garage door it is always the same. You have to wait for a few hours for someone to come on some day in the relatively near future. The problem is that this person may actually never come within the "allotted window" and you may end up having wasted a day off from work waiting to get some simple piece of machinery fixed. Garage doors usually are no different. You are stuck with whoever in your area seems to be doing the bulk of the garage door installations and fixes. And if that person is anything like your local cable company they would really rather that you simply pay the fee for them to come out and not actually have them come out.

When most people think of garage doors or simply their garage they think of the fact that it is where their car practically lives. If you don't own a car and get around in another way you usually keep that form of transportation in your garage, be it bicycle or motorcycle. Unless you are strictly using public transit somehow there is a great probability that one of the large reasons your garage is in existence is to protect your form of transportation from the elements while still being conveniently accessible. A broken garage door then affects how you get around, to work, to play, etc. A broken garage door also can, if you are lazy like many of us are, cause you to leave things outside which can lead to damages and maintenance costs which we are never happy to pay.

Garage doors come in many shapes, brands and sizes and like any industry each brand however small, big, old or new has its own personality and its own way of doing things. So why don't we take the time to focus on a few of the big brands in garage door machinery and get to know what makes them similar to each other and different from each other. Starting with none other than one of the older brands in the industry of garage doors, Wayne Dalton. While you may not know it you have probably seen most of the brands of garage doors that I will go through, but because the installation is often done by somebody else and because people don't want a big logo on their garage door for the most part you probably won't know when you see one.

Aside from the plethora of safety features built into each installed garage door there are other reasons you have a garage door and garage door opener rather than a blue tarp or massive hole in your garage. For starters a tarp would just look tacky, be very loud in the wind, and I am sure you will eventually need that tarp for something other than covering a large section of your house. While having nothing at all may seem like a win-win there are a lot of drawbacks to having a doorless garage, it makes your garage about as useful as a garage-less door, or garage-less garage door to be more specific. Actually if you think about it a garage-less garage door would have a lot of uses on its own, but that is beside the point.

Last time we were looking at one of the oldest garage door companies that still prizes itself on its roots being in a town in Ohio with a lot of Amish history. Wayne Dalton is a company that strives to marry the ideals of traditional American workmanship with the innovation of new technologies which results in some great looking and wonderfully operating garage doors. Next on our list of "big names" is an international competitor. International in the sense that the company has locations and does business throughout the globe, however the headquarters is still located here in the United States in Georgia. Janus is a company that does business all over the world and specializes in a no frills design to benefit businesses. Does that mean you need to be a business owner to be the type of person that should look at Janus as an option? Certainly not.

Simply speaking when you are looking at garage doors for your home, as opposed to commercial garage doors, there are a lot of brands that you can choose from. You have got Wayne Dalton, Liftmaster, Genie, Janus, Amarr and more. Some of these have been covered and more will be covered more in depth not the brands' history what type of products they supply, etc. They all however are producing two different types of garage doors, the traditional style and the carriage style doors that we see  in neighborhoods all over. While they both for the most part fill the same necessity of keeping you and your car in while keeping others out they do have a variety of differences which are worth looking into. Both styles might work for you or one may fit your needs better than another, so if you read through this and think one is for you talk to whoever is handling your garage door installation and see what they think.

Genie Overhead Garage Doors

2015-06-08 11:52:08

Previously we have taken a look at the wonderful world of garage door brands, but the door that covers up your garage isn't the only thing included in getting a brand new garage door installed or a broken garage door fixed. There are tons of bells and whistles that make a garage door worth having. If you had to get out of your car to open your garage door before pulling inside and then close the door behind you manually you probably would just end up parking outside. The great thing about getting a professionally installed garage door is the ease and comfortability of it all. Someone comes to your house or you talk over the phone and choose what sort of styles and options you want, and within a few days you have a door that opens as you pull in the drive way and that won't close on your fingers if you forget to grab something while it is closing behind you. While maybe having a working garage door is not the most extravagant of luxuries it is certainly a small simple thing in your life that working correctly makes everything seem a bit better and run a bit smoother. One company that has built a brand around helping you with that is Genie.

It looks like we are onto another one, another brand specializing in garage doors that is. Chi overhead doors, or just CHI, is another company that excels in both commercial and residential pursuits that is housed right here in the United States in none other than Illinois. They are also a company that takes pride in manufacturing their profits right in Illinois and have made a commitment to providing their customers with the best craftsmanship, value and quality that they can offer. Chi Overhead Doors is another brand that does its best to provide garage door solutions for both commercial buildings as well as personal homes making it another of the "jack of all trades" garage door manufacturers that we've talked so much about already. While Chi does seem to have offerings for any type of door situation you could possibly dream up remember that there is still no one size fits all brand for any situation and so you should seek the advice of your installer on which brand works best for you and what their opinions are of different brands. You can leave brand talk out of the conversations you have until you feel comfortable with voicing your opinion or simply trusting whoever is doing your garage door installation 100 percent.

Amarr Overhead Garage Doors

Amarr is yet another garage door brand that has been proud to be operating within the United States for a very long time. Like the other brands we've looked at there is no one size fits all brand that works for every home or business owner under the sun. However, that being said Amarr might just be the brand that covers all of the bases for what a customer might want in their search for that oh so elusive perfect garage door. You still need to make sure that the brand you go with in the end works for you but Amarr offers garage door solutions for the largest commercial businesses as well as single home owners with a one car garage. Don't let that dissuade you into thinking that they won't be providing you with their best customer service though. That is one of the wonderful things about having an independent installer do most of the leg work for you. All you have to do is sit back and describe your perfect house, with maybe a few extra details on what you want your garage door to look like and they can bring more styles and options to you as you go. They will also have a working relationship with all these brands as well which means you are getting a pretty great customer service representative in the form of whoever you are working with.

Your Garage Door Matters

2015-05-23 15:34:36

Home owners, in terms of home improvement, fall on a spectrum with two ends there are the do-it-yourselfers and the call-someone-for-everythingers. That second term hasn’t quite caught on yet but once somebody figures out a better way to say the acronym I am sure you will be seeing it everywhere. Regardless most home owners fall somewhere in the middle and enjoy knowing when they are out of their depth of expertise and when they can save a bit of money and be rewarded with doing a project themselves. A garage door installation or garage door repair certainly falls near the "I think we should call someone" end of the spectrum as far as home improvement projects go. Your problem may be as simple as a dry belt that needs greasing or it could be something much larger, the problem is while many of us use a garage door every day it is a whole other animal to take it apart and find out what might be wrong with it.
